The somewhat sassy figure in this painting is the typical subject of many of Beynon's paintings but this Melbourne based artist, of Australian-Chinese heritage, inevitably includes other references that reflect her relationship between growing up in Australia as against those of her Chinese heritage. The beautiful 'tattoos' are both Australian in their current commonality and Chinese in their selection of the peony and poppy. Similarly the seals which would have denoted author and owner on a Chinese (paper scroll) painting are used on a canvas but are fictional devices used decoratively. The mingling of Chinese and Australian cultural elements adds to the intrigue of this dominating work.
