This work seems indebted to the works of the Italian landscape painter, Marco Ricci, in both the classical balance of the landscape with its ordered distances, and the use of decorative Arcadian figures in the foreground. Sandby had a significant collection of Ricci gouaches, which would have served him well as models for works like this English view.
