Chepstow Castle is in Monmouthshire, South Wales. The castle and its environs occur in many drawings, etchings and aquatints by Sandby: it presented the artist with ample opportunities to combine themes of grandeur, isolation, drama and decay. The frequency of Chepstow Castle as a subject in Sandby's work may also indicate how he was responding to the demands of the market place.
