The collection contains a large group of both figures and vessels from the 18th century onwards. Both English and Continental traditions are represented and the collection runs through to contemporary times emphasizing the development of porcelain. Of particular significance is the group of seven vases that constitute the Bow Garniture c.1748. This group of R and I marked pieces originates from the very beginnings of English porcelain production and is the only complete Bow factory garniture remaining from this time. Among the figures are 18th century works from the Chelsea, Derby and Bow Factories from England as well as early Meissen and Hochst figures from the Continent.

19th century ceramics are represented by a small but fine group including work by Louis Solon for Minton, Leopold Gely for Sevres and Christopher Dresser for Minton. Art nouveau ceramics are represented with a tea service by Muarice Dufrene and a plate by Henri van der Velde. Australian studio porcelain from the 1990s continues to be collected as do documented pieces from the main European styles of the 20th century. The decorative arts collections are exhibited in the Herbert and May Shaw Gallery on a rotating basis.
