Painter and printmaker Brent Harris is one of arts great individualists. Born in New Zealand and trained in Australia he is one of a group of Australian artists who have made their way with a style that seems to have little precedent. Nonetheless Harris has drawn on the great American practitioners of modernism and fused their concepts with his to create his style.
Moving from early hard-edged abstraction to a fluid organic style based on flowing forms his work displays a continuum with occasional side tracks into colourful woodblock prints and other more sinister works that emerge from his psyche.
Whatever your taste in art, Brent Harris offers a challenge to most viewers with his beautifully crafted work.
The prints in this exhibition were gift to the Gallery and were produced from 1989 until 2004.
