NEW HAMILTON GALLERY: REDEFINING REGIONAL ART GALLERIES

New Hamilton Gallery

rEGIONAL aUSTRALIA’S MOST IMPORTANT COLLECTION WILL SOON HAVE A BUILDING FITTING IT’S SIGNIFICANCE.

the new hamilton gallery is coming to fruition.

WHY a new gallery?

Audiences expect more from gallery experiences than ever before, with regional art galleries now playing a significant role within a national context.

Hamilton Gallery has all the makings to deliver life-changing experiences, however the 60-year old building is incommensurate to delivering on expectations, industry standards and cultural value that’s required from such an institution.

COLLECTION

The gallery has regional Australia’s most important and unique collection and is a place for every story, through exhibitions, public programs, education and engagement.

Our unique art collection has over 9000 objects. We are currently only able to display < 0.9% of our collection at one time, with a maximum of 4% over a year.

Our collection’s unique strengths are in Decorative Arts, European, Australian & Asian Art.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Our collection was seeded on a significant act of local philanthropy, and continues to thrive as a result of community generosity.

The Hamilton Gallery collection includes works by internationally-renowned artists such as David Hockney, Francis Bacon, Paul Sandby and William Hogarth.

The collection also boasts works by nationally-significant artists, including Eugene Von Guérard, Arthur Streeton, Hans & Nora Heysen, John Olsen, Sidney Nolan, John Brack and Patricia Piccinini.

We loan our works to institutions across the globe, including:

  • National Gallery of Australia
  • National Gallery of Victoria
  • Museum of Old and New Art (MONA)
  • Art Gallery of NSW
  • Art Gallery of South Australia
  • Royal Academy, London
  • National Museum, Szczecin, Poland

For our 60th Anniversary exhibition, we created a remarkable collection publication. Nine scholars, curators and academics from across Australia examined and researched four key collection areas and shared their insights:

  • Dr Lisa Beaven, La Trobe University
  • Dr Alex Burchmore, University of Sydney
  • Jane Clark, Senior Research Curator, MONA
  • Dr Mark K. Erdmann, University of Melbourne
  • Dr Vivien Gaston, University of Melbourne

We are exceptionally proud of the Hamilton Gallery collection and its significance in the world's art context, and look forward to providing more opportunities for the community to connect with our collection in our new building.
