Hans Heysen

Hans Heysen

    • Biography

Hans Heysen migrated from Hamburg to Adelaide with his family in 1884. After formal art lessons with James Ashton, Robert Barr-Smith sponsored his studies at the Adelaide School of Art, and in 1889, four other Adelaide businessmen financed his education in Paris, claiming benefits in return. After travelling in Italy in 1903, the artist returned to Adelaide and set up a teaching studio.

In 1904 he married his pupil, the daughter of a former Adelaide mayor, Sallie Bartels, and in 1912 purchased The Cedars near Hahndorf in South Australia after a very successful exhibition in Melbourne. Heysen went on to forge a remarkable art career. While he is best known for his watercolours and oil paintings of the majestic white gums of the Adelaide Hills, the artist produced many accomplished flower and fruit paintings during the 1920s and 1930s.
