For over six decades, Hamilton Gallery (HG) has stood as one of Australia’s most significant regional galleries, celebrated for its internationally renowned collection and deep commitment to fostering creativity and cultural engagement. Hamilton Gallery was established in 1961, following the generous philanthropy of Herbert and May Shaw, whose bequest of 781 works of art in 1958 provided the foundation for today’s extensive collection. This act of visionary support ensured that the gallery would become a vital cultural institution, serving not just the Hamilton region but audiences far beyond.

The gallery’s collection, now comprising approximately 10,000 works, is considered one of regional Australia’s most important. It includes masterpieces by internationally acclaimed artists such as David Hockney, Francis Bacon, and William Hogarth, alongside Australian icons like John Olsen, Sidney Nolan, Patricia Piccinini, Arthur Streeton, and Eugene von Guerard. The wide range of the collection encompasses a variety of artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, decorative arts, and textiles.
