Hamilton Gallery

THE COLLECTION

Hamilton Gallery opened on the 22 October, 1961. Like most regional galleries across Australia, it was initiated by an act of local philanthropy, in this case by Herbert and May Shaw. The Shaw bequest of 781 objects in 1958 laid the foundation for a collection of international significance, which has grown to include over 9000 objects spanning a multitude of mediums, time periods, traditions and cultures. This act of generosity has echoed over sixty years with countless contributions by community members. A wonderful example of this generosity is the Hamilton Gallery Trust, who play a major role in continuing to expand the collection.

The collection’s unique strengths are most evident in the Decorative Arts, European, Australian and Asian Art collection areas, including a rare collection of 18th Century gouache and watercolour landscapes by Paul Sandby. More recent acquisitions have seen the extension of our Australian Art collection through several strategic purchases.

Australian Art from colonial to contemporary, is a key collecting focus and we are committed to improving and expanding on this. A collection area that is underdeveloped and requires significant attention is our collection of art by First Nations people, nonetheless we are making progress in this area with the assistance of local elders and members of the wider indigenous community.

The Hamilton Gallery collection is a wonderful reflection of the region’s heritage and community. Our shared vision for the future is to continue growing the collection into a rich and evolving resource for generations to come.
