Cabinet of Wonders

Curated in collaboration with the University of Melbourne’s Dr. Matthew Martin, Cabinet of Wonders explores the very beginnings of European museum tradition. Hamilton Gallery is unique amongst Australian regional galleries in possessing an impressive collection of artworks typical of a late seventeenth-century Wunderkammer. Drawing on this remarkable collection, the exhibition celebrates the visual and aesthetic pleasure that was an important aspect of early modern speculation about the nature of the world and humanity’s place within it.
