    • Biography

      Lionel Lindsay, born at Creswick, Victoria into an educated and artistic family, studied at The National Gallery School in Melbourne. After travelling to Spain and England, Lindsay resettled in Sydney as a freelance artist and journalist. By 1921 he was making wood engravings, and in 1922, and 1924, he published books of woodcut prints. In 1926 the artist returned to Europe to focus on making etchings, and in 1927 exhibited at the London print dealers P. & D. Colnaghi & Co (est. 1760), the oldest commercial gallery in the world.
